The Olympics begin at 8:00pm on the 8th month of the 8th day of the 8th year of the new millennium-- August 8th, 2008.  They are is doing it real big this year with an opening ceremony that cost approximately  $300 million.  There  is a lot of excitement and controversy surrounding this year's Olympics that are being hosted in Beijing, China.

There has been a great deal of hype about the USA men's basketball team.  This is supposed to be the best  Olympic Basketball Tournament  since the '92 games in Barcelona Spain.  The best swimmer in the word, Michael Phelps, is expected to pick up 8 gold metals for the US while competing in China.   Also the 100, 200, and 400 meter Olympic track records are expected to be broken during the next two weeks.

The sports world was very critical ever since it was reviled that Beijing was going to be the host city for the 2008 Olympics. The political controversy that surrounds these games are going to make it that much more worth watching.  From bad air quality in Beijing to the Chinese occupation of Tibet or the US cycling team getting off the plane with black masks on, somebody will have something to say about everything that happens in China for the next two and a half weeks.

Everybody likes to watch the total metal count which is usually a dead heat between The United States and Russia, but you never know what this year may bring.  So be sure you don't miss any of the next 17 days of world wide competition, because it only comes around every 4 years.
